Mountain Sabyinyo is found in Mgahinga National Park which is situated in the corner of south-western Uganda in Kisoro district, bordered by the Republic of Rwanda to the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.

Mount Sabyinyo is derived from Kinyarwanda/Rufumbira word ‘Iryinyo’, meaning ‘tooth’, hence carrying the local nickname Old Man’s Teeth. It’s an extinct volcano in Eastern Africa in the Virunga Mountains.

The summit of Sabyinyo mountain lies at 3,645 metres (11,959 ft), marking the intersection of the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the summit, it’s not only the joining peak for the three countries but a starting point (land mark) of the Ugandan Boarder.  It is also within the adjoining national parks established by the three countries that is, the Virunga National Park in the DRC, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Climbing Mount Sabyinyo is one of the best mountain climbing experiences in Uganda. Despite the sharp ridges and crater lakes before the last peak, the Uganda Wildlife Authority managed to solve the problem by building handmade ladders which has been helpful to the hikers.

Mount Sabyinyo is covered by rich forest vegetation that make it a perfect habitat for the unique and endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and different bird species.

Hiking Mountain Sabyinyo should be on your travel list this year.  Explore this beautiful mountain in the middle of three East African countries of Uganda, Rwanda & Democratic Republic of Congo and see the beauty of nature.
