While speaking at the Tourism Thematic Conference on Thursday 21, September, 2023, at Hotel Africana, on behalf of Ministry of Energy, Dr. Gerald Banaga Baingi, the Project Manager of the Global Fuel Economic Initiative (GFIE) called upon the people of Uganda to embrace the green concept in different sectors.

In his opening remarks, Dr.  Banaga, representing the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development said that, Ugandans need to embrace alternative clean sources of energy with less emissions and impact on the environment.

“For example, Kiira Motors is producing quality cars and motorcycles that are environmental friendly to suit the roads and distance in Uganda. If you want to go green, the transport you need to touch most is the one with a high impact. And for the case of Uganda, this is road transport with vehicles and boda-bodas,” Banaga said.

He urged Ugandans to embrace clean energy such as the use of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking as an alternative for charcoal, firewood and electricity, use of Solar energy for lighting and other home uses, recycling of plastics, embracing E-Mobility, among others.

He added that in the past, the focus was on generating more energy, however, today things have changed and they are not just looking at the energy generated but rather on how it can be turned into clean and affordable for the masses with less impact on the environment.

The conference was organized by the Ministry of Tourism Wildlife and Antiquities under the theme of Leveraging the Tourism Industry as a Pivot for Economic Recovery through Sustainable Investment Improved Market Access and Visibility”.

The meeting was held in preparation for the world tourism day which will be on September 27, 2023, worldwide and for Uganda, the National celebrations will be held in Hoima district at Boma grounds and the guest of honor is expected to be Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.
