The Ministry of Education and Sports, working with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, has closed two schools in possession of expired licences, and extortion.

In a release on February 6, 2024, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit identified the closed schools as St. Denison Health Training School and Luweero School of Clinical Officers.

According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, the closure was done by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ketty Lamaro, who revoked their licences until further notice.

The Anti-Corruption Unit said that the closure followed investigations made by the Unit, which revealed that both schools’ provisional licences expired in 2013 and 2017, respectively, and had not been renewed to date.

“It was also discovered that the schools were admitting non-qualified students who, on the other hand, extorted in the process and issued them fake academic papers,” the Anti-Corruption Unit stated.

In April 2023, a report from the Auditor General’s office revealed that at least 900 private schools in Kampala capital city are operating without licences. Out of 1,927 schools whose licences were reviewed, only 865 were registered, 928 were not registered, and 134 schools were provisionally licenced, out of which the provisional licences of 102 schools had expired.
