The Minister of State for Gender and Culture, Peace Mutuuzo, has called for stronger action to address barriers preventing women and girls from accessing justice in Uganda ahead of this year’s International Women’s Day.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday March 4, 2026, at the Uganda Media Centre, Mutuuzo noted that although Uganda has made progress in women’s education, political participation and economic empowerment, many women still struggle to obtain justice when their rights are violated.

“International Women’s Day is not just about celebrating progress; it is also a reminder that many women and girls still face barriers when seeking justice,” she said, urging increased investment in legal reforms, accessible courts and community systems that protect women from violence and discrimination.

Mutuuzo revealed that this year’s national celebrations will focus on justice and legal protection for women and girls. The event will take place at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala under the theme: “Scaling up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls in Uganda.”

The commemoration, organized by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, will be presided over by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as Guest of Honor.

Mutuuzo highlighted gender-based violence, limited legal awareness, costly court processes and harmful cultural practices as key challenges preventing women from defending their rights.

She urged government agencies, civil society organizations, development partners and communities to strengthen collaboration in promoting gender equality and improving access to justice.

Ugandans have been invited to attend the national celebrations at Kololo Independence Grounds starting at 8:00 AM, where leaders will outline commitments aimed at advancing justice and equality for women and girls.
