The Minister of State for Kampala Capital City Metropolitan Affairs, Kyofatogabye Kabuye, has asserted that Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago should resign amid ongoing challenges within the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

On September 25, 2024, during a discussion on local television about the KCCA’s shortcomings, Kyofatogabye suggested that the Lord Mayor, out of shame for failing as Mayor to run the city, should be the first to resign.

“I wonder where he finds the audacity to walk around with his head held high amidst all this chaos in the city,” Kyofatogbye said.

He further accused Lukwago of prioritizing political activism over his responsibilities, saying, “99% of Lukwago’s time is spent on activism in Katonga.”

Kyofatogabye, in a similar incident, expressed surprise at the firing of KCCA officials, which occurred on September 24, 2024, labeling it “unexpected yet long overdue.”

He added that before the firing of the officials, he had hoped that a solution to the mess could have been found first, but ultimately, decisive action was necessary given the surrounding circumstances.

The Minister highlighted rampant corruption and misuse of funds as critical issues plaguing KCCA, particularly under the leadership of the executive director, whom he described as having become “something of a goddess.”

He criticized the executive director’s performance, noting that reminders were often needed regarding the persistent garbage collection crisis.

“You are only noticing the garbage problem due to the Kiteezi crisis, but we have been grappling with the rubbish issue for the last two years,” he added.

The Minister’s comments come at a time when KCCA is facing mounting pressure to address its operational inefficiencies and restore public trust.
