Two pupils from Kasana Junior School in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City have been reported dead while nine injured in a fire that gutted the lower-class children’s dormitory on Monday morning, October 30, 2023, at around 4am.

According to Amos Jjuko, the School Head, the fire was caused by a shot circuit, adding that, by the time police reached the school, most of the pupils’ property had been destroyed. He however, asked the parents to stay calm as police investigations are ongoing.

Steven Kaketo, the Masaka City Education Officer, after visiting the school asserted that, they are doing all that it takes to calm the situation.

Jamada Wandera, the Southern Deputy Regional Police Commander said that four of the nine injured pupils are in a critical condition, and have been taken to the hospital.

He added that, police is going to come up with the report about the cause of the fire.

“We have assessed that, the fire is suspected to have started from a circuit where the Matron had put the phone for charging. So, the probable cause of the fire could have been the power circuit.  Parents have come around to check on their children and we have been able to show them the children who are around,” Wandera said.

Wandera further noted that, those who were affected were eleven including the matron. Those who are feared dead are two, and the nine are getting medication from Mulago Referral Hospital in Masaka.

Last Saturday, on October 14, 2023, a fire gutted a dormitory at a school in Kamuli, forcing P.7 candidates to be sent home.
