The violent incident occurred around 10:00 AM in Buwasibi Cell, located in Bunyinya Town Council.

Earlier reports showed that the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officials were attempting to apprehend a suspected smuggler when an altercation ensued.

Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, SP Rogers Taitika explained that the altercation began shortly after the URA officers exited their vehicle, a white Toyota Vitz with registration number UA 902AQ.

Taitika said the officers were allegedly attacked by a group believed to be associates of the suspect who beat the officials and then set their vehicle ablaze.

“As the situation escalated, reinforcements were called in, including army personnel, to help restore order,” SP Taitika said.

Tragically, during the chaos, a 30-year-old male civilian, identified as Brian Mukoni, was fatally struck by a stray bullet. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Two URA officers and two civilians sustained injuries during the clash were quickly transported to a nearby health facility for treatment.

The deceased’s body has been moved to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.

Police have confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to identify those responsible and to piece together the full sequence of events.

Authorities have strongly condemned the attack and are urging the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as the investigation progresses.
