Police in Rakai are on a manhunt for unidentified thugs who attacked and stabbed to death a 50-year-old man with a knife in his home.

This incident happened on September 16, 2024, in Kibati village, Kacheera sub-county in Rakai district, and the deceased has been identified as Umaru Nsubuga.

According to the locals, the criminals broke into Nsubuga’s house in the night, tied up his wife Rayati Twikirize, aged 46, and son Imran Nsubuga, then beat them up. However, they later hid inside Nsubuga’s house until he came back from work and faced his death.

They added that on entering the house, Nsubuga was tied up and brutally stabbed all over his body by these unknown criminals, and afterwards fled the scene.

’’Nsubuga has been receiving death threats from the people he has been having land wrangles with, so we believe they are the ones behind his brutal death,’’ the locals disclosed.

One of the locals called Matsiko revealed that they were able to help the victims after shouting for help; however, Nsubuga was already dead due to the deep stab wounds the thugs inflicted all over his body.

Matsiko also said that police arrested one person; however, he was not familiar among the locals.

’’Nsubuga was killed in a very terrible manner, and he died because the stab wounds he had all over his body were severe and too deep,’’ he noted.

In an interview with journalists on September 17, 2024, the Greater Masaka police spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, confirmed this incident, revealing that investigations are ongoing to have the culprits arrested.

Kasirye added that one person (names were withheld) was arrested to aid in the investigations as the manhunt for the culprits is underway.

’’Police is going to do its best and capture these criminals; however, if anyone has information surrounding Nsubuga’s death, they should inform police so that it can be used to aid in investigations,’’ he stated.

He revealed that Nsubuga’s body was taken to Raka Hospital for postmortem examinations; however, his wife Twikirize and son Nsubuga were also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Disagreements over land ownership and usage have historically led to significant violence, often resulting in loss of life and community destabilization. For example, police in Luweero district arrested two siblings and two grandchildren for killing their 89-year-old grandmother, Yowanina Nalujja, following a dispute over a land sale.
