The Renovations of Lumumba Hall and overhaul Project has commenced on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, with the Handover ceremony of the project to the contractor at the site– Lumumba Hall.
The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, handed over the site to the representatives from National Enterprise Corporation Ltd (contractor) led by Engineer Brian Buhanda.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor said that the Government of Uganda is funding the renovation of Lumumba Hall to the tune of 9billion Uganda shillings.
The construction process is expected to be completed in 12 months.
The Vice Chancellor thanked Government of Uganda for providing the funding to offer decent accommodation to the students and improve their welfare.
He added that the renovation of other halls will be done in a phased manner subject to the availability of funds once Lumumba Hall is completed.
Lumumba Hall was closed in September last year to pave way for its renovation. Students were allocated to other Halls of residences.
Lumumba is the biggest hall of residence at Makerere University with the capacity to accommodate about 700 students.
Adroni Rodney the Estates Minister, Guild Representative thanked Government and the University for the Consideration and extended appreciation from the student’s community for this great achievement.
He said, “The renovation of Lumumba Hall is just one of the many achievements yet to come as we alleviate the plight of the students.”
The handover ceremony was attended by students Guild representatives, University Top management and the support staff from National Enterprise Corporation Ltd.
