The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has asked the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anitah Among, not to use former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga and the homosexuals to cover up for the corruption allegations brought against her, saying Ugandans aren’t interested in her personal fights but rather want accountability on how taxpayers’ money is spent.

He made these remarks on March 21, 2024, in parliament while addressing the media on the steps being taken to address alleged financial mismanagement at Parliament.

“The Speaker has also been on the loose, blaming anybody she can find. She has blamed gays, and I witnessed her blame Rebecca Kadaga. I’m not sure whether there are any personal conflicts between those two leaders; that’s none of my business; my business is that the Speaker accounts for taxpayer money,” Ssenyonyi stated.

He further said that he is not sure who she’ll blame next because she’s constantly seeking someone to blame. Ssenyonyi added that he does not care if she attacks him since the speaker claims that anyone who brings up these issues is fighting her.

Ssenyonyi further reminded the Speaker that opposition leaders respect her as the Speaker of Parliament, but however, she occupies a public office where the taxpayer’s money is kept, so it is their duty as leaders to ask for accountability.

The Leader of Opposition also revealed that he wrote to the Director of Public Prosecution, Frances Abodo, Inspector General of Government, Betty Kamya, and Auditor General, John Muwanga, to conduct an investigation into allegations of corruption and abuse of office at Parliament.

This follows a statement made by the Speaker while in Bukeda District on March 16, 2024. She said, “The people who are fighting me are people who are saying that they want to reclaim their seats as speakers.”

However, the speaker did not pinpoint a particular former speaker of parliament.
