Liverpool began the 2025/26 Premier League season with a thrilling 4–2 home victory against Bournemouth on Friday night at Anfield. It was the team’s first competitive match at home since the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, making it an emotional evening for players and fans alike.
The game was full of drama and goals. Hugo Ekitike, making his Premier League debut for Liverpool, scored the opening goal in the first half after reacting quickly to a rebound. Shortly after the break, Cody Gakpo added a second, giving Liverpool a 2–0 lead and what looked like control of the match.
But Bournemouth hit back strongly. Antoine Semenyo scored twice to level the score at 2–2, putting pressure on Liverpool as the match entered the final minutes.
However, Liverpool responded with determination. In the 88th minute, substitute Federico Chiesa scored to restore the lead, and in stoppage time, Mohamed Salah sealed the victory with a fourth goal.
Salah’s goal was more than just the icing on the cake. It was his 10th goal on an opening day of a Premier League season, making him the all-time top scorer on season openers. He now stands ahead of Premier League legends like Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard, and Jamie Vardy — underlining his reputation as one of the league’s most consistent and dangerous forwards.
After the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot praised the fans for their touching tribute to Diogo Jota.
“The banner in the Kop, the singing of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ and the love they showed Diogo, it was all incredibly moving,” he said. “The result was important, but the support and emotion in the stadium were truly unforgettable.”
The game started with both teams creating chances. Salah and Ekitike tested Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, while Virgil van Dijk went close with a header. Bournemouth threatened through David Brooks and Marcus Tavernier, but failed to score until Semenyo’s quick-fire double in the second half.
Liverpool’s late comeback, driven by Chiesa and Salah, showed their resilience and winning mentality. The win not only gave them three points but also sent a strong message about their intent for the new season.
Salah’s record-breaking goal adds another milestone to his incredible Premier League career, while Liverpool’s emotional performance set the tone for a season dedicated to the memory of their lost teammate.
