St Kizito Secondary School in Banda, Mityana District has taken a major step toward solving overcrowding with the proposed construction of a three-room classroom block worth 250 million shillings.
The project comes as the school struggles to accommodate a rapidly growing student population.
Speaking at the school’s fundraiser and music album launch, the school’s headteacher, Betty Namale Ssebulime said during the President’s visit at the school in 2011, he promised to construct for them a two-unit science laboratory which remains incomplete.
“He found us grappling with infrastructure shortage and promised usa laboratory,” Namale noted.
However, she said, while the school benefited from a science laboratory funded by President Yoweri Museveni, the facility remains incomplete and unequipped, lacking gas, running water, and electricity. As a result, classrooms are being used for practical lessons, lowering the standard of science education.
The function was graced by Judith Nabakooba, Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, as Chief Guest. She appreciated the President for constructing the laboratory and pledged to write a letter together with the headteacher reminding the President.
The Minister alongside old staff laid a foundation for a 250 million shilling, three class room block.
Treasurer Erisa Biribaasa revealed that 70 million shillings has already been collected for the classroom project, with construction expected to start later this year.
With a total of 33 teachers, 19 on government payroll and 14 on private, the school has only six rooms, with at least six teachers accommodated in one unit.
