Kyambogo Residents Opt for Open Dumping of Garbage after Kiteezi Saga

The government created Waste Management Act No. 49 of 2020, a law that encompasses waste management, producer liability, hazardous waste regulations, the treatment and disposal of waste, landfill management, waste incineration, waste transportation across the country's borders, and environmental and public health standards.

Kyambogo residents and the surrounding areas have resorted to throwing garbage along roads and dark corners following the Kiteezi saga, which has resulted in loads of garbage being mismanaged.

The residents claim that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is reluctant to do routine garbage pickups and drop-offs, forcing them to throw the garbage anywhere.

According to George Baale, a resident of Kyambogo, areas without security lights are more prone to garbage piling up, especially at night. He added that the rubbish along the roadside is thrown by drivers.

’’It is now a common phenomenon in our areas around here. People just pick rubbish from their homes and dump it anywhere, including throwing broken windows, irrespective of the outcomes to people living around,” he said.

Baale said that the majority of the people pile up rubbish commonly known as Kasasiro and pay somebody to dispose of it only to find it in incomplete houses and undeveloped plots.

Anthony Dradria, a resident of Banda Zone B in Nakawa division, said that people throw rubbish in trenches, which in turn cause blockage and water diversion from trenches that are created for water flow, which stagnates and weakens roads.

“Bags of rubbish that we always see being dumped at roadsides or trenches sometimes contain dead animals that smell bad for the nearby occupants. We, as a community, now pledge to catch culprits to save our environment, Dradria said.
