The former Leader of Opposition in Parliament and also the Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe County in Masaka District, Mathias Mpuuga, has threatened to make the opposition National Unity Party pay heavily for the recent attempt to demobilize his constituency.
The NUP leadership, commanded by Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, recently held a public rally in Masaka City and asked opposition supporters to shun MPs Mpuuga and Dr. Abed Bwanika, among others, whom he accused of not working according to party interests.
“I understand Masaka better than most of those visitors. That’s why people from Masaka stayed away. The entire mission in Masaka was not about mobilizing Masaka but rather demobilizing it, and the party will pay for it,” MP Mpuuga said.
He made the remarks on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, while featuring on a morning talk-back show on local television.
Mpuuga, who risks censorship from the parliamentary commission in the current petition by the group of legislators, attacked Kyagulanyi for not providing the required guidance and leadership to opposition politicians.
“Opposition isn’t being led well; they aren’t being guided properly; otherwise, the issue of censorship wouldn’t have arisen and been placed wrongly. You have seen a lot of energy from people from my party descending over the character of Mpuuga, and they are hiding behind corruption,” Mpuuga said.
According to Mpuuga, with one year left until the political season, the opposition should be out there asking about how to do things differently, but they are busy fighting his character.
“People want to be worshiped, and that kills the zeal of the people who would have wished to work with the opposition. I am aware they hire individuals to assault those who disagree with them and slander them on social media. We shall not be within the party for a yes man and woman,” he noted.
Mpuuga and other opposition MPs from the NUP fell out with the leadership of Kyagulanyi a few months ago, accusing him of being a bully who feared being challenged.
