The National Unity Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has announced that he will hold a massive rally at Katwe grounds, in Makindye Division immediately after his nomination on Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025.
Addressing the media at NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule on 18th September, 2025, Kyagulanyi urged supporters to turn up in large numbers for the rally, stressing that the party will not be silenced ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“On Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, we shall be nominated, but there are clear efforts to silence us and deny us the opportunity to speak to our supporters. President Museveni will have his nomination rally at Kololo grounds, and as NUP, we shall have ours at Katwe grounds before heading to Nateete for our final rally,” Kyagulanyi revealed.
On whether the party had secured clearance to hold the rallies, Kyagulanyi noted that NUP had already written to the police and was acting within the law.
“We have formally informed the police, as the law requires, that we shall be in Katwe and Nateete. President Museveni will be in Kololo, which is fine, but we shall also have our own rallies,” Kyagulanyi stated.
“As a person, I will not give up, and I want all our supporters to also promise that they will not give up,” the NUP party President added.
NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi condemned the recent arrests and alleged abductions of party supporters, saying they were meant to intimidate the opposition.
“The abductions are acts of cowardice. That is why they are targeting young people who speak against the government. We shall continue to push back against these actions,” Ssenyonyi said.
The party’s secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya, echoed Ssenyonyi’s concerns, accusing security agencies of arresting NUP supporters and then fabricating charges against them.
“All of you have seen the new abductions taking place. During the last election, they abducted 400 people, and to this day, 18 are still missing. Was that lawful?” he asked.
“Recently, they arrested Waiswa Mufumbiro and Kaija Doreen, yet they were not even present on the alleged day of the crimes. They first arrest people, then look for charges. For Kaija, they even fabricated a case of running a school, yet that school is a department of the party,” Rubongoya added.
As Uganda heads toward the 2026 general elections, questions remain about whether the opposition will unite behind a single joint candidate. Growing mistrust among different parties has hampered dialogue and cooperation, leaving the possibility of a sole opposition flag bearer uncertain.
While NUP remains determined to mobilize its supporters and challenge intimidation, the question of a unified opposition candidate remains unresolved, leaving the path to the elections uncertain.
