The National Unity Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi, has promised to deal with party members involved in any corruption scandals.

While addressing NUP members from Wakiso district and members of the press at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Kyagulanyi said that he won’t preside over a party where some members are implicated in corruption scandals when the party is fighting corruption in the current NRM government.

Kyagulanyi’s remarks on corruption came after the NUP leadership asked the deputy president in charge of the Central Region and former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga to resign after he was cited in a corruption scandal.

The scandal was unearthed after an online exhibition named Uganda Parliament Exhibition exposed Mpuuga, who had received UGX 500 million as a service reward’, from the parliament of Uganda.

“As long as I am still the President of NUP, I will fight corruption to the bone, and I want you to hold all of us accountable as leaders because you have power over us,” Kyagulanyi said.

On whether Mpuuga is still welcome as a party member, Kyagulanyi affirmed that Mpuuga is still his deputy president, emphasizing that he still has time to do the right thing.

“The best thing to do is to return the money; the second is to apologize to Ugandans; and the third is to resign the position as commissioner. We gave him those options, and if he does the right thing, welcome him back,” Kyagulanyi added.

In reaction to the NUP leadership’s resignation request, Mpuuga wrote a letter accusing party members of witch hunting by self seekers, opportunists, and populists.

“I accordingly decline the cowardly call on me to resign as a parliamentary commissioner based on spite, envy, and deliberate misrepresentation,” Mpuuga’s letter read.

The corruption allegation has sparked conversations on social media, as many members of parliament, government officials, and social media users are calling on the exposed corrupt leaders to defend the allegations against them.
