The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has promised residents of Kassanda District improved infrastructure if his party is voted into power.
While addressing a crowd in Kassanda Town on 7th October, 2025, Kyagulanyi said the district, which is rich in gold and one of Uganda’s top coffee-producing areas, deserves better roads and public services.
“Uganda exports gold worth over Shs2 trillion every year, and more than half of that gold comes from Kassanda. Yet, there isn’t a single tarmac road in the entire district. We promise that once we are in power, this gold will benefit the people here, and we will begin by fixing the road infrastructure,” he said.
Kyagulanyi also criticized the current distribution of wealth from natural resources. He said it’s time for Kassanda residents to benefit from their own gold, instead of it enriching a few individuals linked to the ruling family.
“We know that most of the gold mines are owned by members of the First Family, if not President Museveni, then it’s his brother Gen. Saleh, or Sodo, or Janet Katana. Meanwhile, the people of Kassanda are working as cheap labourers and earning very little, while the First Family profits. This must stop. The local people must benefit from their own resources,” Kyagulanyi added.
Farida Namatovu, a resident of Kassanda, expressed frustration over limited access to electricity in the area.
“We have electricity poles passing through our villages, but because we voted for the opposition, we are not connected to the power grid. The electricity only goes to coffee and pole treatment factories owned by the rich,” Namatovu said.
The NUP manifesto, launched at the start of the campaign, includes a pledge to reduce domestic power tariffs by half, from Shs1,000 per unit to Shs500 to ease the cost of living for ordinary Ugandans.
Kyagulanyi, who is currently campaigning in the Buganda region, is scheduled to visit Mubende District today, followed by stops in Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola.
