The National Unity Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu has condemned the recent attacks on his supporters by security forces, saying such acts were a prediction of an unfair election.

While addressing his last rally at Masaba Secondary School grounds in Sironko district on Sunday, January 4th, 2025, Kyagulanyi said the security forces have been on many occasions beaten up NUP supporters exhibiting cowardice.

“Our campaign engagements were preceded by a barrage of provocations from the regime police that confronted our supporters with tear gas, electrocutions,” Kyagulanyi stated.

He cited a scenario where Hamuza Lubuulwa, one of the NUP comrades was critically injured by the criminal regime JAT operatives that have been trailing us throughout the campaign season.

According to Kyagulanyi, the operatives deflated Lubuulwa’s car with aid of bullets and injured him on the head.

“We are yet to get justifications for their extremist behavior but these are acts of cowardice and it already shows we won’t have a free and fair elections,” he said.

Kyagulanyi also thanked the people of Elgon subregion for being resilient and for showing support even amidst intimidation and police brutality on many supporters.

“We are grateful to the people of Bugisu for standing firm and boldly supporting us despite all the threats and hostility from the regime police,” Kyagulanyi added.

However, the police SP Taitika Roger the PRO Elgon region issued a statement saying that the victim Lubuulwa Hamza was the one in wrong and alleged that he tried to overtake the presidential candidate convoy and was stopped but he insisted.

“While driving recklessly, he overtook the candidate’s convoy, refused to stop when flagged down by the security detail, and nearly knocked the security vehicle. This prompted a pursuit and interception. On being stopped, he resisted lawful arrest and, in the ensuing scuffle, sustained a wound to the head. He was taken to Hospital,” Taitika said.

From other occupants of the car where Dr Hamza was moving it is said that Hamza, as one of the coordinators of NUP was trying to bypass the convoy to organize the next rally for Party President Kyagulanyi.

Hamza joins many other party supporters who have been victims of police brutality during Kyagulanyi’s campaign trail as many have reported to have been assaulted by security officers in attempts to stop them from accessing Kyagulanyi’s rallies.

Kyagulanyi who has been in Bugisu subregion in districts of Mbale, Bududa, Sironko, Bulambuli will now proceed to Sebei sub region in districts of Kapchorwa, Bukwo and Kween before heading g to Karamoja subregion in the districts of Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, Moroto, Amudat and Napak.
