The NUP party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has wrapped up his Eastern Uganda tour with a stop in Soroti city, where he urged young people to interest themselves in leadership positions.

While addressing the NUP party supporters at the Soroti Inn in Soroti city East after opening up NUP offices on Saturday, November 9, 2024, Kyagulanyi called upon young people to offer themselves for different leadership positions.

“As young people, the responsibility is now up to you to contest for different leadership positions, starting from LCI to the top positions, and that’s how we are going to create change in Uganda,” Kyagulanyi said.

According to Solomon Eseru, a youth leader and potential aspirant in the 2026 elections, youth are willing to contest for different positions, but the resources to run and maintain a campaign are not available.

“As young people, we are very willing to contest for different positions, but it’s very costly to manage a campaign and sustain it without having Godfathers to fund your campaign, and that’s our biggest challenge,” Eseru said.

Monica Akol, a former councilor of East Kyoga division on the NRM ticket, said that the district is not short of young people to contest; it’s just that the old on3s don’t want to give up positions and leave them for younger people.

“You grow up and you find someone a councilor; you also join politics when they are still in the same position for over 15 years when they can upgrade to a bigger position after getting experience and leave the other positions for the youthful upcoming ones,” Akol said.
