A joint security operation between police and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Kitgum District has led to the arrest a man found in possession of elephant tusks.
The suspect, identified as Olanya Alfred, was apprehended on May 16, in Namukora, Aswa West in an intelligence-led aimed at cracking down on poaching activities that threaten wildlife and the tourism industry.
Speaking at a security briefing at the Police headquarters in Naguru on Monday, May 19, 2025, Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke warned that those involved in wildlife trafficking would face severe consequences.
“We are warning the community that when we get you together with UWA, we shall take you on severely,” Rusoke said.
The police have intensified operations in known poaching hotspots in collaboration with UWA to curb illegal wildlife trade. Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activities to prevent further poaching incidents.
In related incidents, police in Arua city recovered two bulls abandoned in a vehicle in Jokiva Cell, Onzivu ward. The livestock had been covered with a black carpet and the suspects had fled the scene.
Earlier on May 18, 2025, in Liria village, Biryafe Sub County in Terego district three animals were recovered, but two had died. Police also recovered a vehicle with registration number UBD 291J in connection with the incident. Community members played a crucial role in aiding police in both incidents.
Rusoke emphasized that these livestock are vital to people’s livelihoods, acquired through the Parish Development Model. He issued a stern warning that authorities will not tolerate criminals found guilty of theft or harm to these assets.
“Once you are caught, you will not be able to apply for police bond but rather face the courts of law,” he warned.
Police are stepping up operations to combat livestock theft, urging the public to report suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement to curb criminal activities.
