The joint security forces headed by the deputy UPDF Spokesperson, Col. Deo Akiiki, have arrested five people, including soldiers captured in the viral video while torturing a suspected motorcycle thief in Kitgum district.
Col. Akiiki identified the suspects as the LCIII Chairperson of Mucwini Subcounty, Christopher Ongee, Coporal Odong Otto Richard Burton, the detach commander, Private Omara Martin Henry, Private Omara Morris, Private Ogwang Dennis, and Obonyo Simon, the GISO Mucwini Sub-county.
“All the suspects who appeared in the viral video flogging a man were arrested. They will be produced before the court martial on December 14, 2023, for prosecution. UPDF condemns in the strongest terms possible acts of torture amongst its ranks and file,” said Col. Deo Akiiki.
He said the suspects appeared in a video torturing a suspected motorcycle thief, Omon Nelson, from the police outpost at Lagot Village, Pajong Parish, Mucwini Sub County, Kitgum District.
Col. Akiiki adds that the arrested will be arraigned before the Field Court Martial at the UPDF 505 Division, Pajimo, on Thursday, December 14, 2023.
Earlier on, the UPDF Spokesperson, Brig Gen. Felix Kulaigye, condemned the act in a press release, terming it heinous as they commit themselves to having a public trial for these personnel in order to ensure justice prevails.
