King Oyo Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom has appointed Rt Hon Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki as the new Prime Minister, replacing Stephen Kiyingi Amooti, who served in the position for two years and five months.
The announcement was made by the King on Friday, 14 Febuary 2025 during a sitting of the Kingdom Parliament at Muchwa Rukurato Hall in Fort Portal City. Calvin, who holds an LLB and a Master’s in Refugee and International Studies, brings a wealth of experience to the role.
In addition, His Majesty the King appointed Owek Henry Basaliza Araali as Deputy Prime Minister. This reshuffle marks a new chapter in Tooro’s leadership with the new appointees set to lead the kingdom into a phase of growth and unity.
Speaking to the media after his appointment, Rt Hon Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki expressed both his honor and awareness of the challenges ahead.
“It’s a great honor, but at the same time, I’m scared because we haven’t done as much as we should have,” he said. “I am going to hit the ground running, focusing on several key issues such as infrastructure, uniting our clans, empowering the youth, and renovating our royal tombs,” he stated.
Having recently toured various counties within the kingdom to listen to the concerns of the people, Calvin acknowledged the challenges facing the kingdom but expressed his determination to tackle them.
“I will choose a hardworking cabinet, and we will shift the focus to ensure we get results,” he added.
In September 2024, Calvin was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Planning and Investment, underscoring his growing leadership role in the kingdom.
His appointment as Prime Minister marks a new phase for Tooro, with a strong emphasis on development, unity, and the future of the kingdom.
