Kenya’s High Court has issued a temporary order stopping the replacement of deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

The matter will be brought before a full bench on October 24, 2024, which will determine the validity of the constitutional issues he has raised.

The announcement came minutes after both parliament and the senate approved the appointment of Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as the country’s new deputy president.

Gachagua was removed from office on October 17, 2024, after senators voted to impeach him on five out of 11 charges.

Through his lawyers, led by Paul Muite, Gachagua filed a court application to stop his removal from office, arguing that the allegations presented against him were unfounded and were not supported by evidence.

A court presided over by Justice Chacha Mwitu on October 18, 2024, issued orders preventing President William Samoei Ruto from nominating a successor pending the determination of Gachagua’s case.

Gachagua also sought an order blocking the National Assembly from vetting, approving, and nominating the submitted person by President Ruto to fill the vacancy in the office of the deputy president.
