Kenyan Gov’t to Build Kshs100 Million Fish Landing Site to Honor Luo Communities

The President of Kenya, William Ruto has pledged to build a fish landing site valued at approximately Kenyan Shillings 100 million (Ugx 3 billion) at Wich Lum Beach to honor Luo tradition.

He announced the plan while visiting Got Rwamogi in Bondo town, Siaya County, alongside the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, to officially close the fourth edition of the Piny Luo festival.

While at the luo shrine, the two leaders met with the chairman of the Luo Council of Elders, Odugi Randa, alongside other elders, including Prof. Anyang’ Nyon’go, the governor of Kisumu; Oburu Odinga, the senator of Siaya County; and Opio Wandayi, the cabinet secretary for energy.

“In our effort to carry this tradition to the next level, right there at Wich Lum Beach, we will be building a landing site at the cost of Kshs100 million to support the fishing communities as part of this trading and culture of fishing to the next level,” said President Ruto.

He said, “Because culture is drastically evolving, there is a need for better education among the Luo communities.”

Presidents Ruto and Museveni jointly opened Nyangoma Technical Training College-Rwamogi campus, built at the cost of Kshs 400 million to support education among the Luo communities in the area.

He said the institution is part of government initiatives to support the Luo community in the Nyanza region.

“In honor of this event, and in the presence of our friend, Muze President Museveni, we will then announce that this Rwamogi Campus is officially announced today and will immediately admit students beginning this January, 2025,” said President Ruto.

President Museveni emphasized needs for unity, and peaceful coexistence among the luo communities. He urged them to engage in massive productivity to creat wealth.

The 2024 Piny Luo festival brought together Luo communities from Uganda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Tanzania.

Held under the theme of Spirit of the Luo Nation: Luo Unity in Diversity and in the Luo Diaspora, the event was hosted by Governor James Orengo of Siaya County.
