The president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has condemned the alleged illegal arrest of the former opposition figure Kizza Besigye, saying that it was a violation of both local and international law.

According to Kyagulanyi, Besigye was picked up from Kenya by the Ugandan security forces and smuggled into Uganda through the Malaba border point to the military court in Makindye.

While addressing the media, moments after visiting Besigye in Luzira prison on Friday, November 22, 2024, Kyagulanyi said that the Kenyan government should be ashamed of the unlawful arrest.

“We are glad that the Kenyan government has come out to distance itself from the act, but because it was done in Kenyan territory, I expect the Kenyan government to do more than mere talking,” he said.

He, however, noted, “Besigye is still in good health conditions and was not tortured, though he continues to face psychological torture because of the nature of the bogus charges imposed on him, which are similar to those that were imposed on me in Arua.”

Kyagulanyi also condemned the impunity of the Ugandan regime and called upon all well-wishing Ugandans to stand against such acts and work so hard to see that they return their country to the path of the rule of law.

However, Dr. Korir Sing’Oei, the Kenyan Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, has since denied allegations implicating the Kenyan government in the abduction of Kizza Besigye, adding that “such is not the act of the Kenyan government.”
