A gruesome head-on collision has left ten people dead and several others brutally injured along the Eldoret-Kitale highway in Kenya.

This incident happened on January 3, 2025, in the morning, after a public service vehicle (matatu) from the Great Rift Shuttle Transport Company that was using the Eldoret-Kitale route collided head-on with an Isuzu lorry in the Chemosot area in Kenya, leaving several dead.

Initial reports show that this accident was caused by the driver of the lorry, who lost control and veered into the opposite lane, hence leading to a head-on collision with the matatu, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The Isuzu lorry was carrying water pipes while the matatu was carrying 14 passengers during the accident.

Benjamin Mwanthi, the Uasin Gishu police commander, confirmed the incident and revealed that the two vehicles collided on a narrow section of the road after Soy market as the matatu was heading to Eldoret and the Isuzu lorry was coming from Kitale town.

Mwanthi also confirmed that the matatu driver was among the dead; however, the lorry driver left the crime scene after causing the accident.

’’Efforts to locate the lorry driver are underway, and statements are going to be got from the accident survivors to ascertain what really happened,’’ Mwanthi said.

The severely injured were taken to different hospitals in Eldoret for better medical treatment as the bodies of the dead were taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for post mortem examinations.

The police urged all motorists and road users to be cautious and adhere to traffic rules to avoid such devastating accidents in the future.

The Eldoret-Kitale Highway has been noted for its dangerous sections, contributing to numerous accidents over the years.

In June 2024, six students from St. Teresa Bikeke Boys High School were injured when their tuk-tuk was involved in a collision with a lorry while they were returning home for midterm break.

The crash resulted in the death of the boy riding a bicycle who was struck during the accident. Fortunately, all injured students were reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment at Kitale County Referral Hospital.
