Police at Katwe and the Kampala Metropolitan South are investigating a tragic shooting incident that occurred at the Munyonyo roundabout in Kampala district, which left one person dead.

The deceased has been identified as Francis Masembe, a 34-year-old resident of Kajjansi, in Wakiso district, who tragically lost his life due to gunshots he sustained in a shooting incident on April 7, 2024, at around 1:30 am near Kaggwa Bridge, on the Entebbe Express Highway in Makindye Sabagabo.

While addressing journalists on April 8, 2024, at the Naguru Police Headquarters, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, said that Masembe was shot after a night out with his wife, sister, and a family friend while riding their motorcycles but stopped near Kaggwa bridge trying to contemplate how to safely transport Masembe, who was too drunk to ride back home.

ASP Owoyesigyire added that as they were still by the roadside, a black BMW car registration number UBM 300M owned by Isaac Ssali had an altercation with Orishaba, the wife of the deceased, and even accused them of being robbers, and the situation just escalated into a shooting where Masembe sustained fatal gun wounds in the right side of his ribs.

’’It is so unfortunate and sad that a simple altercation led to a loss of life, but justice is going to be served because the culprit was arrested for further questioning,’’ ASP Owoyesigyire noted.

He said that the Katwe police division responded quickly, the crime scene was cordoned off, and 12 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Masembe was rushed to Kirrudu Referral Hospital but died on arrival due to the fatal gun wounds he had sustained in his ribs on the right side.

According to the police preliminary findings, the pistol that was used by Ssali to commit such a heinous act is privately owned by him, but this does not give him the right to misuse it.

Owoyesigyire assured the deceased’s family members that justice will be served because the suspect was arrested by police, and they are going to fast-track the investigation, process the suspect, and hopefully arrange for the suspect to appear in court as soon as possible.
