Local leaders in Kalungu district have called upon the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) to extend the enumeration days since most villages have not been counted and few enumerators were allocated to the district.

According to local leaders, the enumeration exercise is going on smoothly, but it is slow because the enumerators in the field are very few in the district.

While being interviewed by journalists on May 16, 2024, Hajji Wumalu Kisirinya, the Local Council I Chairperson of Kago village in Kasali parish, Bukulula Sub County, said that the district was given fewer enumerators to count people, which is impossible because the district is too big and most people will not be counted by the end of the enumeration exercise.

Hajji Kisirinya said that when he checked one of the enumerators’ census tablets, it had 147 villages he was supposed to count, while his other colleague was given 126 villages.

“There are many other villages that were not put on the tablet, yet they have to be counted because they exist. We need more enumerators and more days for the enumeration exercise to be completed in the district; otherwise, UBOS will not be given the right statistics or the data will be falsified, which will be bad for the government and UBOS,’’ Kisirinya revealed.

Swaibu of Kikota village also highlighted that his village is so big and people have not been counted, which is the same case in town, yet the census exercise is left with three days to end.

‘’If UBOS wants to get the right statistics from this exercise in Kalungu district, it should allocate more enumerators to finish the job because many villages in Kalungu have not yet been counted, which is bad,’’ Swaibu revealed.

The Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Chris Mukiza, recently said that the government has extended the census exercise in the three districts of Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono by one more day. However, the rest of the country will close by the stipulated date.
