The territorial police in Kagadi have arrested a driver of a vehicle that ran over one of the demonstrators, resulting in a fatal traffic accident that occurred on February 26, 2024, at Iguruka during a demonstration by residents of Bwikara, Muhoro, and other surrounding areas, together with a group of boda boda riders over the deterioration of roads caused by rain damage.

According to ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, at the time of the incident, the driver, identified as Stephen Tibihikira, was driving a government vehicle with registration number UG 6998M belonging to the District Health Officer, Kagadi local government.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the driver was travelling at high speed when the vehicle struck and killed Magezi Tumuhaise, 25, a resident of Rwenzori Cell, Kayanja Parish, Mayirirwe Subcounty, in Kagadi District,” Hakiza stated.

He further said that the area LCV chairperson and his team responded to assess the situation of the deceased person, who was reportedly among the demonstrators, but by that time, the driver had already fled the scene.

Hakiza said that the police conveyed the victim’s body to the hospital mortuary, and Tibihikira was arrested.

The police advised community members to seek intervention from relevant authorities for amicable solutions to their issues rather than resorting to unlawful assemblies and illegal demonstrations.
