The second day of the ongoing Case Management Training for Judicial Officers within the Eastern Region has specifically focused on improving their skills in the area of Criminal Trial Procedure and Writing Judgment, through simulations and sessions conducted at the Court of Appeal Conference Hall, Level 7.
The event, organized by the Judicial Training Institute and moderated by HW Lillin Bucyana, Acting Registrar, JTI, offered the audience valuable skills on how to increase efficiencies and make better decisions in an intensive, interactive format.
The morning session, chaired by Lady Justice Dr. Winfred Nabisinde, the Resident Judge of the Lugazi High Court Circuit, began with an interactive Plea Bargain Quiz moderated by Justice Prof. Andrew Khaukha, the JTI Executive Director.
The event was then followed by an interactive Plea Bargaining Simulation exercise organized by the dynamic Justice Richard Buteera, Deputy Chief Justice Emeritus, in collaboration with the ODPP Plea Bargaining Team, consisting of Ms. Margaret Nakigudde, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions and Focal Person, Ms. Lillian Nandaula, State Attorney, and Ms. Susan Wakabala, Advocate.
The afternoon was engrossing, focusing on ‘Judgment Writing,’ where the officers were divided into four different groups.
Justice Stephen Mubiru, the head of the Mukono Circuit, ended the day with two powerful presentations, one on the Introduction to Writing a Judgment, and the need for formal, ongoing training, and another on the format and elements of Civil, Criminal, and Appellant cases.
Justice Richard Buteera oversees the Plea Bargaining Simulation exercise in collaboration with the ODPP. “The training sessions conducted during the day reaffirmed the JTI’s dedication to developing the capacities of the judiciary through skill-building training that aims at improving the effectiveness and quality of judicial decision-making,” said the organizers.
