The Jinja District Khadi, Sheikh Ismail Adi Basonga, who is representing the Muslim Community in Jinja wants Nyege Nyege music festival cancelled.

Basonga made these remarks while speaking at a fundraising event for Busoga Women Muslim Daawa and Development Association in Jinja.

He claimed that the music festival is immoral thus the need for it to be cancelled.

Basonga wondered why the event which was previously held in Buikwe district, had been taken to Jinja.

“Previously, it was organized in Buikwe District, but it will be held in the city center. I don’t know the reasons why they chose Jinja City, but perhaps those who have investigated what is taking place in Nyege Nyege can testify,” he noted.

He said that, although many Ugandans will earn from Nyege Nyege, most of them are against it.

“Things that are being done in Nyege Nyege are not good, especially for the young generation. It generates a lot of money, but promotes immorality in society,” Basoga said.

However, on August 22, 2023, during a press conference held in Jinja, Mayor Peter Kasolo invited the Jinja community to embrace the festival as a channel for economic prosperity. The community leaders strongly declared their commitment to making the festival a success and promised to fight anyone who comes up to oppose Nyege Nyege festival.

Nyege Nyege, is Africa’s essential music and arts festival, which will return for its 8th edition in a new location for four days from Thursday, November 9, 2023, to Sunday November 12, 2023, with revelers each parting with Shs120, 000 per day.

The function will take place on three conjoined sites along the Nile River, Jinja Golf Course,  and the Jinja Showground.
