Jinja High Court Launches Video Conferencing to Streamline Judicial Processes

The Jinja High Court has launched a video conferencing system on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in Jinja city, to improve the efficiency of court procedures by allowing witness statements and hearings to occur remotely.

The conference was presided over by the Principal Judge at Judicial, Dr. Flavian Zeija and Lady Justice Dr. Winfred Nabisinde, the Head of the Jinja High Court, who said that this launch represents a breakthrough in Uganda’s judicial system that reduces the need for inmates to be physically transported to courtrooms.

Dr. Nabisinde, noted that the newly implemented system will enable legal authorities to conduct hearings and gather evidence from witnesses located both within Uganda and outside Uganda.

“We had successful trials already conducted involving participants from the UK and Australia,’’ Nabisinde said.

She added that this is crucial in addressing the backlog of cases that has plagued the Ugandan judicial system.

Justice Nabisinde emphasized that integrating ICT solutions like this system is essential for improving access to justice and streamlining court operations.

She highlighted that it will increase cooperation that will foster better communication between various legal authorities, thereby enhancing collaboration in handling cases.

“The establishment of the video conferencing system was made possible through support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which shows the international cooperation in enhancing judicial processes in Uganda,” Justice Nabisinde noted.

The Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, Ian King also said that on behalf of the UNDP in Uganda, it is an outstanding privilege to be part of the launch, as well as to participate in the Jinja Court Open Day.

“This System was set up with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),’’ King added.

The launched event featured various judicial dignitaries, including Justice Madrama Izama Christopher, Lady Justice Linda Tumusiime-Mugisha, and several Chief Magistrates.

Additionally, an Open Day event themed “A People Centered Approach to Justice,” will encourage community engagement.

As part of this initiative, Principal Judge Zeija planted a tree at the court grounds, symbolizing growth and commitment to justice.
