It’s Not Yet Safe for Liverpool, Barcelona in Champions League

The win boosts Liverpool’s chances of reaching the quarter-finals, where they could face Club Brugge or Aston Villa. It also keeps them on course for a treble, as they lead the Premier League by 13 points and will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. Before the second leg, Liverpool will play Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

On Wednesday night, March 5th, 2025, two European football giants, Liverpool FC and Barcelona FC, played their first leg, respectively, to secure space in the Champions League quarterfinals.

The late-night clash between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, at the Parc des Princes was a battle of both the sweet, bitter taste and never a bed of roses for the England footie giant, the Reds.

After several attempts and storming all the corners of the Parc des Princes stadium, Liverpool’s midfielder Harvey Elliot, 21, finally scored a goal against PSG at the 87th, restoring a bucket of hope to millions of fans across the globe, ending the match with a 1-0 win against the host, PSG.

It took Elliott 47 seconds after replacing Mohamed Salah to score the only goal, set up by a perfectly weighted pass from Darwin Nunez.

Despite the win, the Reds are still not safe at all and will have to display aggressive play in the second leg at Anfield on March 11th, 20265, to cement their chance to play in the quarterfinals.

On this day, PSG, aka Les Parisiens, will have to secure a goal difference of two in a bid to enjoy the quarterfinals football breeze.

Despite the massive dominance of the Wednesday night clash with the Reds, PSG created several chances, played with ease, but repeatedly failed to gift Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson with goals, which would have enabled them to sail through the journey of playing in the quarter finals.

PSG coach Luis Enrique was frustrated with the result, telling BBC Sport, “We deserved to win. Their best player was the goalkeeper. Football is unfair sometimes, but we are ready for Liverpool.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his team was second-best, saying, “They were much better than us. A draw would have been lucky, but we managed to win.”

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Raphinha’s goal secured a 1-0 win for 10-man Barcelona against Benfica after Pau Cubarsí was sent off in the first half. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich took control of their tie with a dominant 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, as Harry Kane scored twice to help his side break a six-game winless streak against Xabi Alonso’s team.
