On May 6, 2025, Inter Milan secured their place in the UEFA Champions League final after a stunning 4-3 extra-time win over Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final.

The match ended 7-6 on aggregate, following one of the most thrilling contests in recent Champions League history.

Inter Milan started the game strongly and took the lead in the 21st minute when Edin Dzeko assisted Lautaro Martinez, who scored with a precise shot. Just before halftime, Martinez was fouled in the box, and Hakan Çalhanoğlu converted the penalty, giving Inter a 2-0 lead at the break.

Barcelona, however, came out in the second half with renewed energy. Nine minutes after the restart, Eric Garcia scored after connecting with a cross from Gavi. The pressure continued, and by the 60th minute, Ansu Fati equalized for Barcelona, making the score 2-2. This brought the aggregate score to 5-5, setting up a tense final stretch.

Barcelona then scored again to take the lead, putting them in a strong position to advance. But in the 93rd minute, Inter’s 37-year-old veteran Achille scored a dramatic equalizer, making him the second-oldest player to score in a Champions League semi-final. His goal forced the match into extra time.

In extra time, substitute Davide Frattesi stepped up for Inter, scoring the decisive goal that put them ahead 4-3 on the night and 7-6 on aggregate. Frattesi’s goal sealed the win, and Inter’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer played a key role in keeping the team alive with an outstanding performance, making 14 saves over both legs.

Former striker Edin Dzeko praised Sommer, saying, “Every time a Barcelona player shot, Sommer reacted perfectly.”

Barcelona’s manager Xavi expressed his disappointment after the match but praised his team’s effort.

“I’m very disappointed for the result, not for the performance. The team gave everything. We’ll come back stronger to make our fans proud.” He said.

Despite the loss, Barcelona has already won the Spanish King’s Cup and remains a contender for the La Liga title.

Inter Milan’s win marks their second trip to the Champions League final in three years. The team’s determination and timely performances earned them a well-deserved spot in the final, while Barcelona’s fight was brought to an end.
