IEC not Competent Enough for Upcoming Elections—FDC

The Kisoro by-elections were mostly calm, with allegedly a few cases of malpractices reported. The independent candidate, Grace Ngabirano Akifeza, who was defeated in the NRM primaries, won the elections, with the National Resistance Movement candidate coming second.

The Forum of Democratic Change (FDC) party has termed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as incompetent and not ready for the upcoming elections despite all the money the government has invested in it.

The party spokesperson, John Kikonyogo, revealed this during the party’s weekly press conference on November 18, 2024, at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala.

Kikonyogo noted that the IEC is not competent enough, with an example of the Kisoro By-Elections, where all the top management of the commission was present, stating that there were still electoral malpractices that happened.

“As the elections were ongoing, the police spokesperson of Kisoro district stated that they were hunting for the Bufumbira North Member of Parliament, John Kamara, who was accused of ballot stuffing. But to our surprise, the IEC has not stated that matter. How will IEC be able to handle a whole country’s elections if they couldn’t handle just a mere district?” he said.

He added that despite the party’s efforts to change some election reforms that could favor every party that is contesting, the high court refuted their claims.

“We head into an election whereby the electoral reforms favor the party in government. So as FDC, we shall go for the elections with the knockout tactic so that even if the officials favor a certain candidate, we shall knock him out severely in that the officials see our effort,” Kikonyogo added.
