The High Court’s Criminal Division has set April 4th, 2025, as the date to deliver a ruling on the bail application of the detained Kampala lawyer Eron Kiiza.

The decision, delivered by Justice Michael Elubu, came after a tense hearing marked by procedural challenges and heightened security measures.

Kiiza, who has been imprisoned since January 7, 2025, is serving a nine-month sentence for contempt of court, handed down by the General Court Martial.

Through his lawyer, Nicholas Opiyo Kizza, the jailed lawyer is challenging both the conviction and the sentence. Opio asked the court to release Eron Kiiza on bail, a decision that is yet to be decided upon.

Three prominent individuals, including Kiiza’s wife, Sylvia Tumwebaze; Makerere University law lecturer Dr. Busingye Kabumba; and human rights advocate Primah Kwagala, stood as sureties to vouch for his character and compliance with bail conditions.

Justice Elubu adjourned the matter, stating that “the need to review additional submissions, including an appeal document that had initially been omitted from Kiiza’s case file.”

With his bail ruling now set for April 4, Kiiza remains in detention, continuing to serve his sentence as legal and human rights advocates intensify calls for justice.

The upcoming ruling is expected to be a crucial turning point in his case, with implications for judicial independence and human rights in Uganda.
