As part of the implementation of Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project II (KIDP II), the Ministry of Health has commenced the second phase of the project with a boost of over UGX 46 billion to equip and upgrade health facilities in the region.

The KIDP II, with a budget of €10 million in initial funding by the Italian government, seeks to increase access to healthcare for the region’s poor population, with 70% lacking proper medical services.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Diana Atwine, while launching the project, warned contractors to adhere strictly to timelines and quality standards to avoid penalties and being blacklisted for substandard work.

She added that the contracts have been awarded for construction and equipping works, with the initiative expected to be completed within 18 months.

This project aims at building new hospitals, expanding existing facilities, training medical staff, and constructing staff accommodations in every district to support healthcare workers in the most remote areas.

On October 30, 2019, the Ministry of Health, supported by UNICEF and IntraHealth International, launched a $1.8 million project to strengthen health systems in the Karamoja region, using a two-pronged approach to overcome some of the region’s biggest health care challenges.
