The restoration of peace in Gulu and Northern Uganda stands as a major achievement of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) under President Yoweri Museveni. After decades of insurgency by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) defeated the rebels, enabling displaced persons to return home and rebuild their communities.
Hon. Dan Atwijukire the Member of Parliament for Kazo County praised the UPDF during a parliamentary tribute to Museveni, saying the military’s efforts have saved lives and protected property, creating a conducive environment for economic and social transformation in the region.
Gulu City Mayor, Alfred Okwalinga, said the restored security has allowed residents to utilize local resources for growth.
“People have exploited the existing peace and security to reconstruct themselves, rehabilitation and resettlement programs have also benefited the area,” he said.
Peace has facilitated major development projects, including the Gulu Water Supply and Sanitation Project, producing 15 million liters of water daily and funded by the World Bank and the Ugandan government. The Gulu Community Park now offers safe recreational and educational spaces for over 250,000 children.
Organizations such as ‘JamiiyaKupatanisha’, a local non-profit focused on conflict management and human rights, continue to support post-conflict reintegration. Meanwhile, the Gulu Military Hospital provides essential healthcare services for UPDF personnel and the community.
From a war-torn region to a thriving economic and educational hub, Gulu’s transformation reflects the NRM government’s commitment to peace and development. Through the combined efforts of the UPDF, local leaders, and civil society, Northern Uganda is steadily building a peaceful and prosperous future.
