Police have released security guidelines to be followed by venue proprietors and supporters to ensure tight security in different social and entertainment places in Uganda during the English Premiership which is set to commence on Friday, August 11, 2023.

According to SCP Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson, the Police commanders have been asked to coordinate with the entertainment owners and managers to ensure the supporters’ safety.

“As always, all our territorial commanders, have been tasked to work closely, with all proprietors and managers of social entertainment places like bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels, gardens, and nightclubs, among others to enhance measures designed to keep supporters safe and to raise awareness of the existing threats of terrorism, among football fans well-wishers and staff,” Enanga said.

Enanga said that, the security measures include adequate staff, avoid overcrowding, regular collection of glass bottles and glass broken pieces are quickly cleared away, prohibiting illegal drugs, full operation of CCTV 24/7, control smoking areas, and noise levels be regulated by residents.

Enanga asked managers to assist in transporting customers leaving the venue after late games in case it’s affordable and share tax number plates and late-night transport means available.

He warned against confrontations, unnecessary arguments, and fights should walk away and continue to enjoy the festivities from another place.

Enanga urged football fans to keep their valuables out of sight, cover drinks, and avoid picking drinks at random explaining that they should be vigilant at all times and alert police in case of any suspicion.

He however, noted that, though there is no specific threat directed towards the screening of matches under the English Premiership and other football leagues, all proprietors of major venues and hang-out spots should be mindful of the existing threats since their venues remain attractive to terrorists.

According to Enanga, the security measures are part of their wider plan to work more closely with the hospitality and entertainment sector to help protect the public.
