The rehabilitation of the 41-kilometer highway stretching from Matuga through Semuto to Kapeeka in Nakaseke district is set to begin.

On Monday, June 12th, 2023, the Minister of Works, Gen. Katumba Wamala,  said the contract for the rehabilitation works has been handed to Abubaker Technical Services and General Supplies Ltd., a local contractor, at a cost of UGX 217 billion.

While presiding over the handover, Gen. Katumba said the road project is vital to local residents traversing Wakiso, Luwero, and Nakaseke Districts and will spur economic activities within the area.

Sarah Namujju, the Nakaseke Woman Member of Parliament, welcomed the project, describing it as a big relief to motorists since the road had been in an appalling state for so long.

She thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for delivering on his pledge to rehabilitate this road.

Allan Ssempebwa, the UNRA spokesperson, said awarding the contract to a local firm is part of the wider move to support Ugandan companies to compete with international construction companies.

He adds that the rehabilitation works will run for a period of 24 months and are expected to start in September 2023.

During the rehabilitation work, the contractor is expected to ensure an effective drainage system on the road in a bid to offer people a better road than before.
