The government, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, has announced plans to remove brokers, idlers, and drunkards from all the bus parks in Uganda.

In a statement issued by Winstone Katushabe, the Transport Licensing Board at the Ministry of Works, on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the decision will ensure heightened security and orderliness in the bus parks.

“Brokers, idlers, and drunkards are to be expelled from bus parks. This is part of the resolutions arrived at in a meeting between the Chief Licensing Officer, the Uganda Bus Owners Association, and the management of Kisenyi and Namayiba bus terminals,” Katushabe said.

The Ministry instructed the Director of Namayiba and Kisenyi Bus Parks in Kampala to, with immediate effect, inform the targeted categories to vacate.

According to the statement, this move will further enable bus owners to save up to Shs 335,000 per local bus and Shs 1,340,000 per inter-state bus paid to brokers for loading daily.

John Bosco Muwonge welcomed the move, saying it would restore sanity in the bus parks.

Haningtone Kidega, a local trader at Namayiba Bus Park in Kampala, said most brokers are often drunk while on duty and treat passengers with inhumane characters, a practice that will be reduced once the decision is implemented.

Recently, the Works Ministry held an extensive meeting with the administration of the two parks to stall the rent increment by 1 month and with Terminal Management to do away with all brokers, idlers, drunkards, and drug abusers from within and around bus terminals who cause insecurity to the traveling public.
