The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has reassured Ugandans that the ongoing shortage of vehicle number plates is set to be resolved soon.

In a statement released by the Ministry on Monday, September 2, 2024, they said that the suppliers ABS and Tumpeco have committed to airlifting new plates into the country by Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

This announcement follows a crucial meeting held at the MoWT headquarters, which included representatives from the ministry, vehicle importers, dealers, and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

The meeting aimed to address the pressing issue of unregistered vehicles in the country.

“To expedite the clearance of the backlog, URA has agreed to prioritize the processing of registrations once the new plates arrive,” the statement read in part.

The Ministry and URA encouraged the public to ensure their vehicle taxes are paid in anticipation of the new stock.

The statement further revealed that URA will pilot a 24/7 operation to clear the backlog of unregistered vehicles in the bonds starting September 3, 2024.

“This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and reduce waiting times for vehicle owners,” the statement added.

The shortage of registration plates prompted urgent discussions among key stakeholders, including Gen. Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, and the Commissioner for Transport Regulations and Safety, who met with suppliers and importers to seek a swift resolution.

The government urges the general public to remain calm as efforts are underway to resolve the situation and implement lasting solutions.
