The government and Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) is yet to relocate refugees from Tororo-Malaba borders to their settlement in Uganda after the ongoing security screening exercise.

The Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Eng. Hilary Onek said that there are plans to relocate the refugees from Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya who returned to Uganda and currently camping at Tororo.

The Tororo Resident District Commission’s (RDC) office said that, the refugees are currently camping at his office after going through unbearable conditions while at Kakuma camp in Kenya.

In a statement released by Minister Onek, over 1,500 refugees were reported to have found their way to Kenya where they hoped to get better education, better livelihood and other relief services.

“However the refugees found the services in Kakuma refugees camp not better than those offered in Uganda. As a result, the refugees requested to be assisted to return to Uganda, a request the Kenyan government declined telling them to come back on their own like the way they went,” the statement read.

The local authority of Tororo district said that the busses that were sent from OPM and United Nations (UN) Refugees agency to pick the refugees unfortunately picked those from Busia and left the ones in Tororo.
