The Finance Minister Matia Kasaija on Thursday, June 15, 2023, while presenting the National Budget for the next FY 2023/2024 at Kololo Independence Grounds revealed that, government secured 2.2 trillion shillings to address flooding, traffic congestion and unsignaled junctions in the greater Kampala Metropolitan (KMP) area.

He noted that funds have been set aside to address the poor road infrastructure and unemployment in the areas covering Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi district and their municipalities.

Minister Kasaija revealed that the funds will also have 404kms of roads upgraded including junction signalization, eight urban authorities, rehabilitation of 30 storm water drainage points, upgrade of 23 markets, and construction of 25 parks and industrial work spaces for small scale manufacturers.

According to some traders, the worry is on the money being swindled by some corrupt government officials and shoddy work is done.

“I hope that the concerned authority and ministry will indeed address the issue of flooding. We are scared that more people will be washed away by the floods. You know these people have a habit of eating money and do poor work,” said Ssessanga a business man in container village-Nakivubo.

The total National budget for the next financial year is 52.7 trillion shillings and out of this, an allocation of 4.5 trillion shillings which is approximately 13.3% of the budget was set aside for road maintenance and construction, railway development and rehabilitation of water and air transport development, among others.
