A gas explosion that occurred in an industrial building in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, has killed three individuals and left more than 200 people nursing wounds.

The incident, which occurred at a company that refills gasoline cylinders, triggered a massive fire that engulfed the building and spread to nearby structures.

According to Kenya government Spokesperson Isaac Maigua Mwaura, the explosion that occurred on Thursday night, February 1, 2024, at around 23:30 p.m. in Embakasi district caused a “huge ball of fire that spread widely,” sending shockwaves through the surrounding community.

The Kenyan Red Cross reported to the scene and successfully evacuated 271 people to various health facilities across Nairobi, with an additional 27 treated on-site.

The Kenyan Police Chief, Wesley Kimeto, confirmed the deaths of three individuals, with the possibility of the death toll rising as search and rescue efforts continue.

According to Kimeto, emergency services are working tirelessly to extinguish the fire and provide assistance to the injured while authorities investigate the cause of the explosion.

He said that the fire has also caused damage to surrounding properties, further affecting livelihoods and businesses in the area.

In a statement released by Regulator EPRA, the gas plant was operating illegally, adding that it had declined three applications for construction permits to build a storage and filling facility at the site.

One guard who was on duty at the time of the incident is currently in police custody to assist in the investigations.

This tragedy highlights the dangers associated with improper handling and storage of flammable materials. It acts as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and prioritising responsible practices within industrial settings.
