Four people have been confirmed dead and 13 others injured following a fatal motor accident that occurred early Tuesday morning at Amungura Bridge along the Busia–Tororo highway.

According to police, the crash happened at around 6:45am on July 29, 2025, when a speeding vehicle registration number UA 889AM knocked down a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road. The impact caused the driver to lose control, veer off the road, hit the bridge, and plunge into River Malaba.

Three passengers died on the spot, while the pedestrian who was struck first also died instantly. Thirteen others, including the driver, sustained serious injuries.

SP Michael Kananura, the Police traffic spokesperson, attributed the accident to over-speeding and reckless driving.

“Our preliminary findings indicate that speeding was a major contributing factor. The driver failed to control the vehicle after hitting a pedestrian. This tragic loss of life could have been avoided,” SP Kananura said.

He says all injured victims were transported to Tororo Hospital for emergency treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination.

The wreckage was later towed to Busia Central Police Station as investigations continue. Police are also working to identify the deceased and notify next of kin.

SP Kananura urged motorists to observe speed limits and be extra cautious near pedestrian crossings and populated road sections.

“This is a wake-up call for everyone. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” he said.
