The former Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, has asked the newly appointed LoP, Joel Ssenyonyi, to work towards uniting the opposition and focus on addressing issues affecting Ugandans.
He made these remarks on January 10, 2024, while formally handing over office to his successor, Ssenyonyi, at parliament.
Mpuuga said that he is committed to working with a new opposition leader and urged Ssenyonyi to remain steady and committed even when he faces challenges.
“I ask you to have courage in working with various people, which will be challenging a bit, but do not lose hope,” Mpuuga stated.
He also appealed to Ssenyonyi to communicate effectively so that he is understood well, not to take any issue personal, focus on the positive, be patient, seek support in case of any challenge, and remember that he isn’t alone in this struggle.
He also further noted that Hon. Ssenyonyi, young as he is, is very reasonable and deserves support so that he takes further the duty that Opposition started.
Mpuuga further added that difficult people cannot be changed, but he should set boundaries. He thanked the shadow ministers and staff who worked with him, asking them to support Ssenyonyi in his new role.
