Fire has gutted Mutungo Police Station in Nakawa Division, destroying a number of documents, case files, SMG rifles, and ammunition. Five detainees who were being held at the station survived the fire.

In a statement released on December 22, 2023, deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire alleged that the fire is believed to have originated in the Office of the Officer in Charge and subsequently spread to other parts of the building.

“Three SMG-Rifles rifles and ammunition were lost as the fire reached the armoury, and station diary books stored in the Office of the Officer in Charge were also consumed by the flames,” said Owoyesigyire.

“It is noteworthy that the officers on duty managed to rescue the five detained suspects, and essential office property, such as radios and case files, was salvaged from the blaze,” he added.

He stated that an immediate investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the fire, and the investigation team has been on the ground to provide updates and more details.

He assured the public that measures are being taken to address the aftermath of this unfortunate incident.

According to Owoyesigire, police, in liaison with Kampala Capital City Council, will give an extensive report on the investigation of the fire.
