Local Council I Defense Secretaries have called upon the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) to help them put a stop to the increasing crime rate in Mukono Municipality.

According to the local leaders, the villages currently with the highest crime rates in Mukono municipality are Lower Nabuuti, Central Nabuuti, Lweza, and Kitegga.

They further revealed that the youth are the ones who are committing the crimes and move in gangs that steal and, at times, kill people during robberies, hence making all district leaders and the residents of the said villages very worried and fearful about their safety.

During an interview with journalists on May 7, 2024, in Mukono, the Local Council I Defense Secretary of Lweza, Joakim Sendi, revealed that they had written an official letter to the CDF requesting him to come to Mukono and help crack down on the main camp for thieves called Benghazi Camp, which is found in Kitegga village, in Mukono municipality.

According to Sendi, the Benghazi camp is the main camp and meeting point for the thieves and where they make plans before they attack people in different villages.

‘’We wrote to the CDF because Benghazi camp is deadly and is like a palace for these thieves since it is where all plans are made before they are carried out, and then after, these thieves spread out all over Mukono, steal from our people, and at times kill them, which is so worrying because this happens on a daily basis,’’ Sendi noted.

The Nabuuti Local Council I Defense Secretary, Engineer Moses Bbosa, added that there is a lot of drug use and misuse in the municipality by the youth, who are not scared of anyone, and during the day.

Bbosa noted that the youth do not want to work but want quick money, hence the reason why they just use drugs, which makes them deadly once one encounters them.

”There is a lot of drug use among the youth in Mukono municipality, which has forced them into a lot of heinous crimes like theft, rape, defilement, hard core crimes, and domestic violence, hence leaving their families, partners, and people around them living in fear and danger too,’’ Bbosa noted.

He added that once the CDF goes to the affected villages in Mukono, sanity will be brought to the area.
