The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Vice President for the Eastern Region, Proscovia Salaam Musumba, has faulted the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) over its failure to resolve the alarming poverty rate in Busoga Sub-rregion despite unwavering political support.

She said this on Monday, August 14, 2023, during the close of a prayer week spearheaded by the Busoga Consortium for Development, seeking divine intervention for unity, forgiveness, and development in the region held at Namayingo district.

Musumba described the regime’s laxity in developing the region as unfortunate.

“It is so unfortunate for the people of Busoga who have continuously supported the NRM party but have not gained anything from it. The Busoga region is among the strongholds of the NRM, but they have not benefited,” said Musumba.

A recent report from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) indicated that the Busoga sub-rregion was one of the poorest in the country.

The prayers, which brought religious leaders from various faiths, including Protestants, Catholics, Muslims, Orthodox, Adventists, and Lutherans, among others, were meant to foster unity, forgiveness, growth, and prosperity in the region.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja maintained the government’s commitment to continue spurring development in the region through various programmes, including PDM, like any other region of the country.

Bishop Paul Samson Naimanhye of Busoga diocese, who officiated the service, assured the people that he believes that the joint prayers will help address the problem of poverty in Busoga but also create unity among the leaders, which will help them serve their voters better.

The prayers were attended by Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja, First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, Minister, Office of the Prime Minister (General Duties), Justine Kasule Lumumba, Busoga Members of Parliament, local leaders, and residents who believe that collective prayers will help in bringing unity among the people of Busoga, hence catalysing development across the region.
